Its impossible to sum Hibby up in one short paragraph but our “old man” certainly carved out a permanent place in the hearts of all of Beagle Rescue Victoria.

Hibby entered our care at twelve years of age after the Black Saturday fires left his family with nowhere to live.  Hibby’s personality and antics were something to behold but above all Hibby opened our eyes to the beauty of having an old dog in our lives. His needs were simple: good food and a warm, comfortable bed to sleep the day away on. The presence of an old dog in your life is truly a special experience- the wise eyes that look up at you after a hard day with understanding, the snores coming from the bed by the fire that just seem to relax and ground you, there is nothing to compare it to.

The reality, however, is that these old dogs often don’t find a new family to call their own.  Understandably, people want more than just a few years with them, and they require more health care than their younger counterparts. The seniors that come into our care are either with us much longer than the younger ones, or quite often become what we call our “forever fosters”. These forever fosters are placed with families who can provide love and warm beds for them but the medical costs remain our responsibility. In the last few years we’ve had cancers and warts removed, treatments for arthritis, lumps and bump checked for anything suspicious, and medication for dementia, to name just a few.  These on-going costs add up but we believe that these old dogs deserve a chance and the right to live their twilight years in as much comfort as we can provide.

Sadly our beautiful old Hibby left us on October 12th 2011 and the Hibby Foundation has been created in honour of the dog that taught us so much. All proceeds from this foundation will go directly to care of the seniors and special needs dogs that find their way to us and need so much help.

Please donate and help us give these gentle old souls a chance and the care they require.

The Hibby foundation is a memorial to one of the most unique dogs to ever enter our care.
